Joseph is studying electricity and magnetism this semester. We have a book and kit for each. After finishing the magnetism kit, we wanted to do a more powerful electromagnet than what we could do with the kit. So, one trip to Ace hardware, and ...
It's pretty strong, and it makes sparks! Joseph's pretty happy and looking forward to going through the next kit.
That's Gideon's foot in the picture.

Ice cream and muscles!
We are cranking ice cream for Joseph's birthday party today. By hand, of course! Joseph wanted to be the first to crank, and wanted to know why it makes him so tired. We had a fun discussion about how exercise tears down muscles and how they rebuild while a person rests. Now I think he's going to crank the whole job himself! He says he wants to be strong enough to pick up a table.

Mind?
Yesterday Joseph helped Sarah with the dishes.
(That’s not the success story, but it is nice, isn’t it? \:\) )
But when the dishes were gone, Joseph did not want to get down from the sink and threw a fit. So he was assigned to sit in a chair for awhile until he could change his attitude.
Sarah was finishing up in the kitchen when she heard a meek little voice say "Mind?"
"What Joseph?"
"Mind?"
"You want to mind me now?"
Joseph said yes in his own way (which is a "heh heh heh" giggle of delight that he has gotten his message across and is enthusiastic that he’s about to have his request granted — in this case, his request was to mind :) ). Sarah had him do a few more things and he obeyed.
For the first time, our little boy specifically said he wanted to mind his Mommy! :)

Nana!
Yesterday, Joseph brought me the phone. "Na! Ba! Na! Na!" He said. He wanted to call Nana and Papaw. He’s recently developed a love for talking on the phone, and will chatter away about everything he sees. He especially loves calling Nana.
"Sweetie," I said, "We can’t call Nana today. She’s in Colorado and very far away from her phone."
"Na!" he insisted.
So I took the phone and called his Daddy. He wouldn’t care who he talked to, right? As long as he got to talk to someone, right? I explained to his Daddy what was going on, and handed the phone to Joseph.
Oh, he was so excited! He eagerly took the phone from my hand as if it was the greatest thing in the world.
You should have seen his face drop when he heard his Daddy’s voice. "Na?!?" he said. This wasn’t Nana! What was Mommy thinking?
He hung up the phone and walked away. I guess we’ll have to call Nana next week sometime.

Growing Vocabularies
Joseph is saying more and more words everyday now. He’s recently said "Na" (Nana), "Ba" (Papaw), "Che" (cheese), "Pa-ee" (potty), "Keys" and "Cor" (corner). He’s also beginning to string words together, saying "Go Bed," and "Big Car." It’s so wonderful to be able to communicate with my baby boy
Meanwhile, I think Stephen is saying "Mama."

Sitting!
Stephen just learned to sit up! We got lots of cute pictures. :)
Meanwhile, Joseph's been potty trained for two days! Still having a number of accidents, but he's getting the idea. It's a lot of work, for everybody concerned. (Momma is an incredibly hard worker. I think I'm more proud of her than I am of Joseph.)
Today we are contemplating the purchase of a Suburban or other large vehicle for our growing family. We can't fit in the family car any more. The saddest thing is whatever vehicle we get probably won't have a bench seat up front where Momma can slide over next to me when we're travelling. :(

Swimming in Gatorade
Today, Joseph decided he was a big boy.
I try to encourage this feeling in him. Usually. I let him help me with the laundry by handing me clothes to go in the washer, one sock at a time. I let him help me change Stephen’s diaper by wiping the baby’s bottom. He often finds Stephen’s pacifier or a toy to cheer him up when he’s crying. He has some chores — feeding the fish, picking up trash and throwing it away, putting the used bottles in the sink. So, he thinks he’s pretty big.
Mommy was busy making a bottle for Stephen, who thought he was dying. Joseph came to me at that point and asked for some juice. "Not yet, baby," I said, "I will get you some in a minute." He then disappeared. Knowing how his little mind works, warning bells should have gone off.
"Oh," he surely thought to himself, "I’m BIG. I can get it MYSELF."
The next thing I heard was the glass pitcher bouncing off the kitchen floor and gatorade splashing off the walls. I raced to the kitchen to find Joseph, devastated, sitting in a pool of orange gatorade. Thankfully, the pitcher hadn’t broke, so he wasn’t hurt. But the look on his face was indescribable. Somewhere between horror and disappointment.
I picked him up, rinsed him off, then we had a talk about waiting when Mommy says "Wait." We also talked about how he wasn’t big enough to do everything on his own yet, and that meant he was to stay out of the fridge. He nodded several times, his bottom lip quivering.
So, Joseph learned a lesson, and I got an orange kitchen

Trust and Obey
Joseph behaved perfectly last night in church services. He sat quietly next to me coloring while I held his brother, and sang whenever everybody else did. I was so proud of him.
Since it was singing night, and since he had behaved so well, his daddy asked him if he wanted to come up and lead a song. Joseph looked shocked when I told him to get down and go to daddy in the pulpit. He walked slowly and gingerly, taking little half steps and looking around in amazement as if he were thinking "Are they really letting me do this? Am I going to get in trouble?" He got to the front and lead everybody in "Trust and Obey" — the perfect song for my little boy. His daddy then put him down and he ran back to me and sat quietly for the rest of the service.

Go, go, go!!!
Joseph is running back and forth from one end of the living room to the other (diagonally, so he gets the greatest distance to run), shouting, "Go, go, go, go, go!"
Meanwhile, Stephen is doing pushups, in nothing but a diaper, so we can see that he’s figured out how to get his very fat — I mean, "plump" — belly off of the ground, pulling himself up on nothing but his hands and toes. And he responds to his name, now!!! Sort of. He’s busy intently focusing on his pushups and some interesting spot on the floor.
Joseph just brought me his bear Howard and a diaper, because apparently Howard needs a diaper. I asked him if he thought he shouldn’t be the one to diaper Howard, and I’m pretty sure he said something like, "Not my job."

Snuggling
Joseph was sitting with me just now drinking his evening milk and snuggling. I told him I was real glad we could snuggle together before he has to go to bed. Then I asked him if he'll still snuggle and cuddle with me when he's 18. He nodded. :)

Lots of dogs
Joseph brought me a Sesame Street Grover and Elmo book last night and informed me that Grover is a “dog,” and so is Elmo. :) I guess if you're that fuzzy, you're a dog.

3 Months Old
Well, Joseph, you have been with us almost three months . You are such a beautiful baby! And you have learned so much in your short life. You’re learning how to grab onto things, and you’re starting to try to hold your bottle, which is still just too big for you. You’re trying desperately to stand up all the time, but you still need me and Mommy to hold you. And you’re also getting very talkative! You just love it when you get me to mimic the many sounds you make. Some of these sounds don’t even occur in English.
Joseph, you’re a very happy little baby. You smile so much, and your smiles are one of the most beautiful
sights I have ever seen. It doesn’t take much these days to make you happy, and it makes me feel so wonderful when you smile simply because you see me.
I love you,
Daddy

Brand New Person
Little One,
You make me so happy! I have always wanted a child of my very own — and now here you are! We can’t wait for you to be born. We have so many exciting things we want to do with you.
I’ve been waiting for you my whole life. The day your mother told me she was pregnant with you was one off the most surprising and exciting I have ever had. We’d only just started our new family, with the two of us. Now we are going to be three. Ever since that day I have been thinking about you. You are so very special to me.
It’s so wonderful to me to think about how you are a brand new person. There is nobody else in this world just exactly like you. I wonder what you will be like. I wonder what ways you will be like your mother, and what ways you will be like me, and what ways you will be like your grandparents. I also wonder what things will be different and completely new about you. I wonder what things you will find interesting, what kind of games you will like to play, what foods you will like to eat, what things you like to read and talk about.
I can’t wait to read and talk to you. I know that as a little baby you will be working quickly to learn what we are saying so you can take part in the things this family does. Some day maybe you will watch your little brothers and sisters do the same thing, and maybe some day you will watch your own children do it, too. You and I will have a lot of interesting things to say to each other from the day you are born onward. In fact, I am already talking to you now, in Mommy’s belly.
It’s been so fun watching Mommy’s belly get bigger as you grow. You are growing every day! When we first found out about you you weren’t even as long as my finger. Now you are bigger than my hands, and before you are born you will get even bigger. And then after you are born you will keep getting bigger and bigger until you are all grown up and you have become a man or a woman instead of a boy or a girl.
Speaking of that we can’t wait to find out if you are a boy or a girl. Just think: for months now you’ve been growing away hidden in Mommy’s belly where only you and God know that secret! We’re ready to find out, too; We are so eager to learn everything we can about you, and also we want to decide what to name you.
Your Mommy and I are going to give you a name from the Bible. We want to name you after one of the the good people in that Book who lived as an example for us, teaching us how to live close to God. I’m reading to you from the Bible already, while you’re in Mommy’s belly. slowly as you grow after you are born, you will learn to understand what I am reading to you. Someday, Lord willing, you will read the Bible to me! And as you grow up you will learn all about the good man or woman of God that we name you for. I hope you will want to be just like that person.

Anxiously Waiting
Dear Little One,
I love you so much. Every day we watch my belly grow, and we thank God for giving you to us. Your Daddy loves you a lot, too. He often talks to you when I’m half asleep, and shares secrets with you You’ve got a very good Daddy who would give the world for you.
The other day, we heard your heartbeat or the irst time. It was the most beautiful sound in the world! I can’t wait to meet you!

Surprise!
We saw you for the fist time today. Before Dr. Wood showed you to us on the sonogram, your Daddy and I weren’t sure you were there — but we saw your heart beating and were thrilled! then you started to jump around, almost as i you were excited to we finally found you. You had managed to hide from us for 8 whole weeks! But we’re so happy to know that you’re there, and can’t wait to name you and hold you and watch you grow. I thank God for you, little one, and I love you so much!
